How does one keep up with research, learning and reading while balancing a job, family and other life constraints?
Better yet, how do we learn more effectively and efficiently when there's an endless stream of information coming at us at all times?
My answer might surprise you.
In this episode, I go deep on the tools, strategies and framework I use to stay up to date, read broadly and apply constantly.
But the best part is that no matter your learning style, constraints or limitations, I promise there's something applicable for you:

- The best way to transfer knowledge into wisdom (13:50)
- Different methods and techniques to index/ categorize your notes (23:50)
- Ways to use constraints to keep you on track (34:30)
Whether these tips are helpful or not, we would really appreciate your feedback! Please reach out to us at info@artofcoaching.com to let us know what was most helpful, what you’d like to learn or hear more about, or how we can provide you with more value!
If you have specific questions, you can submit them to us HERE at any time. Remember that the more context you give us, the better advice and guidance we can give.

It may go against our natural tendencies, but failing is a crucial and necessary piece of the puzzle.
When it comes to the process of coaching development, we must reembrace fear and failure. We will go nowhere if we prioritize acceptance and validation above growth.
Kirsten Ahrendt, a Head Coach and Director of Coach Development at Crossfit Invictus, emphasizes that it is the responsibility of the leader to create an environment that fosters this type of growth - one where people are celebrated when they admit their faults and supported in the reiteration and problem-solving process.
Kirsten is a coach and creative. Previously, she was a professional athlete (soccer and rugby), member of the U.S. 7’s Rugby team, graphic designer, business owner, geologist and a Cutco saleswoman. She thinks critically and creatively about the coaching profession and aims to inspire and educate other coaches to evolve society’s relationship with health, fitness and performance.
In today’s episode, Kirsten goes into depth about:
- The struggles she’s experienced in her career (1:00)
- The mindset she believes has helped her be so successful (6:00)
- Specific strategies to create an environment that fosters failing forward (35:00)
- How to change your mindset and develop confidence when selling you services (47:00)

Monday Nov 07, 2022
Monday Nov 07, 2022
They’re that person who ALWAYS has the answers.
They’re full of all the facts and stats, and can’t help but spew them out as if they got punched in the “random facts jejunum” (Jackie Moon reference anyone?)
If you know someone like this, or even if this person is YOU, today’s quick hitter episode explains the different reasons why people may act this way, and how we can better manage our conversations with them.
Keep in mind that these are very general strategies. At the end of the day, we want to help you learn HOW to think - not WHAT to think. So as you utilize these tools, be sure to consider all the details of your context.
The more specific the situation, the better strategy you’ll create.

E246 | Danny Matta: Social Agility & Unfiltered Leadership
Monday Oct 31, 2022
Monday Oct 31, 2022
It’s a timeless question: What makes a leader great?
Some will say it's empathy and compassion, others believe it's trust and accountability or the ability to inspire.
I'd argue it's none of the above but rather the skill of social agility- knowing what to be in the moment, in accordance with the context, combined with compassion- that allows a leader to truly stand out.
It's for this very reason that we wanted to talk to Danny Matta. With experience as a physical therapist in the military setting, an entrepreneur, CEO of a cash-based PT practice, author and now educator, it's safe to say today's guest Danny Matta knows a little bit about finding that social agility.
And the leadership advice he shares today comes form years of iteration, and a willingness to learn, adapt and grow.
With that said, as opposed to an interview, today’s episode is more conversational - like you’re eavesdropping on two people catching up over coffee. We cover a couple questions asked from our 30-day Challenge members, along with other topics such as:
- How being an authentic boss who cares about the wellbeing of your employees results in a more productive and happier employee (23:45)
- How to negotiate with somebody who may be hiding something or not telling you the entire truth (33:30)
- How to deal with the creeping fears of failure and/or success (55:00)
- How to get your point across when it seems like the person next to you doesn't really value your message (1:05:00)
You can find out more about Danny below:
Book - F*CK Insurance
If Danny’s entreprenueral story resonates with you, whether you have your own business or you do something on the side, be sure to check out our live Brand Builder Workshop. From the outside looking in, there doesn’t seem to be a lot in common between negotiating with a criminal to release hostages and coaxing your child to turn in their homework on time.
And yet, in both of these difficult situations there are some common strategies that are overwhelmingly effective; Both require tactical listening, curiosity and patience.
Today’s guest, former hostage negotiator Derek Gaunt, teaches us how to approach high stakes conversations so you can better influence the other person and more effectively (and quickly) resolve conflict when there’s a lot on the line. Specifically, we discuss:
- Why hostage negotiation is the same as any negotiation
- How to remain curious in a triggering conversation
- Ways to practice negotiation without being in one
- The key to influencing to anyone and everyone
- How to deal with irrational people and behavior
Derek Gaunt is a lecturer, author of Ego, Authority, Failure©, and trainer with 29 years of law enforcement experience, 20 of which as a team member, leader and then commander of hostage negotiations teams in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. He is a hostage negotiation and incident command subject matter expert who frequently speaks at hostage negotiations and SWAT conferences across the country.

Sometimes the best way to move forward is to remind ourselves of the past. Why?
Because adaptation is a purposeful process.
It requires reflection, inspection, and progression.
Today’s episode is all about answering the question “What advice would I give my younger self?” Some points are obvious, but there's also some questions that will challenge your assumptions, and give you the kick in the pants you may need to initiate the adaptation process.

- What feedback/criticism should I be listening to and applying? (15:45)

E243 | Deconstructing Disagreements at Work & in Life
Monday Oct 10, 2022
Monday Oct 10, 2022
“How do I deal with a difficult colleague or co-worker, get on the same page as my spouse or partner, or confront someone who’s trying to undermine me at work?”
“How do I deal with CONFLICT?!”
If you find yourself seeking answers to these questions, this episode is for you.
Today’s podcast walks you through several real life examples of conflict using our L.I.S.T.E.N. framework, a tool we created to help you navigate the messy realities of life, leadership, and human interaction.
More specifically, the framework helps you to identify the pertinent details of your situation, and then leverage the opportunities available to you. These details include:
- How to identify what drives the person you’re in conflict with (Drives Quiz)
- How to recognize the power dynamics at play ( AOC Podcast E63: Power Dynamics in Leadership)
- How to choose the right type of communication style for your context (AOC Podcast E240: The 4 Styles of Communication)
- How to use the information available to determine what influence tactics are appropriate (AOC Podcast E202: Why Facts & Logic Don't Change Our Minds)
The reality is that the baseline of all communication is misunderstanding. And the better we can deconstruct misunderstandings, the better communicators we will be.
If you want to be proactive about developing these skills, improving your ability to communicate with your audience in a way that’s digestible for them, and gain the knowledge and experience necessary to play “communication chess,” Art of Coaching has solutions for you.
Our 1-on-1 mentoring and live Apprenticeship workshops both offer you the opportunity to gain experience having hard conversations, be coached and evaluated, and walk away prepared to have more successful interactions.
We only have one more Apprenticeship Leadership Development workshop scheduled for 2022, and our 2023 event dates are locked inl Don’t wait to get the formal training you need to improve the quality of your interactions and relationships, and overall quality of life. Sign Up Here today.

Monday Oct 03, 2022
Monday Oct 03, 2022
Today’s guest, Annie Duke, is an author, speaker, and decision-strategist. As a former professional poker player, she has won more than $4 million in tournament poker. During her career, Annie won a World Series of Poker bracelet and is the only woman to have won the World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions and the NBC National Poker Heads-Up Championship. She retired from the game in 2012. In today’s episode, Annie dives deep into decision-making under uncertainty, and gives you the kick in the pants you need to take action and apply it - so, for once, I don’t have to!
Specifically, she covers these key concepts and tools that are essential to understanding how to make good decisions:
- How to evaluate your situation using a “Cause-benefit analysis” (29:50)
- How to leverage the “endowment effect” to properly place value on things, ideas, or beliefs (32:50)
- How to use the “sunk cost fallacy” to avoid making poor decisions (39:30)
- How to set “kill criteria” so you know when to quit (44:00)
More on Annie:
Annie’s latest book, Quit: The Power of Knowing When to Walk Away, will be released October 4, 2022 from Portfolio, a Penguin Random House imprint. Her previous book, Thinking in Bets, is a national bestseller.
