E299 | How to Quit Being a People Pleaser
Monday Nov 06, 2023
Monday Nov 06, 2023
People pleasing - we’ve all seen it before (whether we recognized it or not) - constantly being agreeable, always saying yes, never setting any boundaries - all to the point of self-destruction. If you haven’t experienced it yourself, it’s likely you’ve witnessed someone else demonstrate these behaviors.
And although it may have short-term benefits, we know that these self-destructive tendencies are not sustainable, and can lead to mental, physical, and emotional exhaustion and burnout.
If this is something you think you might struggle with, or if you know someone who does, today’s episode provides a wide variety of perspectives on what “people pleasing” can look like in the day to day world, a number of root causes, and a handful of different solutions you can use to help you manage these behaviors.
More specifically, I dive into:
- Quotes that hit - some of the most impactful sound bites I’ve heard on the topic
- What drives you? How our drives can lead us into unhealthy people pleasing behaviors
- The downside to many of the mainstream self-help resources that address the topic
- The necessary self-reflection that has to take place before we can make long-lasting behavioral changes

“Only the unprepared are overcome by pressure.” - Lou Holtz
When it comes to public speaking, not only can solid preparation help to calm your nerves and give you confidence, but if done well, it will be the one thing that sets you apart as a professional.
Why? Because a thorough preparation process shows the host how much you care, and is the only thing that will allow you to speak clearly and directly to the audience, help you get your message across, and impact the lives of each individual in the crowd.
In today’s episode - Part 2 our series on Public Speaking - we reveal a number of often overlooked, yet pivotal components to add to your preparation checklist, allowing you to create an unmatched experience for your audience. We dive into:
- The questions you need to ask about your audience to guide your content development
- Technological considerations to account for before you create your presentation
- How to make sure you’re delivering the specific message your audience needs to hear
- The little things that make a big difference - going above and beyond for your host and audience

E296 | Lisa Feldman Barrett: Rethinking Emotions in Leadership and Life
Monday Oct 16, 2023
Monday Oct 16, 2023
The job of scientists is a tough one - to take complex, multifaceted, messy concepts, and do their best to simplify them in a way that is understandable and digestible to the general public.
However, today’s guest, Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett, warns that if something is too simple, we probably shouldn’t believe it. Especially when it comes to human behavior and emotions, there’s nothing simple about it - because variation is the norm - not averages. And in today’s episode, Dr. Barrett explains exactly why that is and how it should change the way we view and approach our interactions.
Dr. Barrett is among the top 1% most cited scientists in the world for her revolutionary research in psychology and neuroscience. She is a University Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Northeastern University, and she holds appointments at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, where she serves as Chief Science Officer for the Center of Law, Brain and Behavior. In addition to the books 7 ½ Lessons About the Brain and How Emotions Are Made, Dr. Barrett has published over 260 peer reviewed scientific papers.
Not only do we dive into the scientific research that disproves the way many of us have been led to view emotions, Dr. Barrett also does a phenomenal job of speaking to these concepts in a way that helps us apply it to our daily lives. Specifically, we address
- “The Great Man Theory” - why there is no one-size fits all approach to emotions and what they mean
- How understanding emotional constructs on a deeper level can make people more adept at navigating social situations
- The physiological and psychological processes of how we give meaning to our emotions
- Specific instances where knowing this information can directly influence life outcomes for you and those you impact daily

If there was anything you could talk about for hours on end, what would it be? Maybe it’s a hobby, your work, the people you care about, or your favorite memories - it could be anything!
Now imagine if someone told you they wanted you to speak on that topic, but they only give you 45 minutes to do so. They also don’t tell you anything about who you’re speaking to (outside of maybe their profession or field), or give any more specific clarification on the goal of the presentation.
How would you widdle that down? How would you know which information to include and what to leave out?
As someone who’s been speaking for over a decade, I can honestly tell you that this circumstance happens more often than you might think. That’s why today’s quick hitter - the first of a series on public speaking - covers some baseline principles, tips and strategies on how to handle this situation or others like it, specifically:
- How to increase the clarity and specificity of your topic (2:55)
- Which research is necessary for an effective presentation (7:00)
- Two easy-to-remember guidelines to help you prioritize information (17:10)
- A straight-forward list of questions to ask yourself to ensure you get your message across and make the impact you want on your audience (19:45)

E294 | Why Do I Freeze Up?: How to Handle Stressful Situations Like a Pro
Monday Oct 02, 2023
Monday Oct 02, 2023
“I don’t know. I just froze up.”
Have you ever just “frozen up” in a really important situation? Maybe you clammed up in a team meeting, forgot the opening to your presentation, or didn’t know how to respond in a social conflict. Maybe your mind just went blank, you started rambling nonsense, or you kind of just stood there, nodding your head.
Freezing can look a variety of ways on different people. But no matter what it looks like, the costs can be high - a lost opportunity, a strained relationship, or a hit on your own mental health.
If you’ve ever experienced something like this or if you know someone who has, this episode is for you. Today, we explore the science behind what is happening in our brain and body when we freeze, what it can look like, some root causes behind the response, and a few very TACTICAL AND PRACTICAL approaches you can use to combat this occurrence.
Specifically, we dive into:
- The scientific definition and what is happening in the brain during a “mom’s spaghetti” moment (7:10)
- The first step to addressing this response and the specific questions you should reflect on to help you identify potential root causes (14:40)
- How to train freezing out of you (21:10)
- 3 key performance indicators (KPIs) to track your progress as you practice (32:10)

Life transitions are often some of the most difficult experiences for people to work through. Whether you’re facing a career change, a personal evolution, a shift in your health or relationships, or moving to a new home, change requires the skill of adaptability.
In today’s episode, our guest, Jesse Williams, reflects on the life experiences that helped him hone his skill of adaptability, and reveals the wide variety of areas where that skill became the lynch pin of his success.
Although Jesse would describe himself as a washed up athlete, he is anything but that. Growing up on the south-side of Brisbane, Australia, he rose from playing for the local football team to moving to America, playing as a powerful anchor on the defensive front at Arizona Western. There, his exceptional skills led him to become America’s top recruit, earning him a position at the University of Alabama, where he played a vital role in securing two National Championships. Defying all expectations, Jesse was drafted to the Seattle Seahawks, becoming the only Australian to win a Super Bowl. A husband, father, and coach, Jesse now speaks worldwide about his journey as an athlete and cancer survivor, working to provide opportunities for the next generation and using football as the catalyst.
Despite the fact that Jessie talks a lot about sport, and a good bit about strength and conditioning, at its core, this episode is about transitioning into different cultures, finding yourself throughout the process, and learning how to take your platform and use it for something bigger than yourself. Some of the specific topics we get into are,
- The childhood adversity that laid the foundation for his success (12:20)
- The life transitions that forced him to become a better communicator (19:45)
- Specific skills that transferred from being an athlete to a coach and entrepreneur (32:20)
- The lessons he learned from the coaching staff at Alabama - what it means to “do your job” at the highest level (39:20)

As a business owner, author, and someone who has gone through a career transition, I often get asked by others - “how did you do it?”
This simple question has paved the way for some of our most popular services at Art of Coaching - our Brand Builder live workshop and our group mentorship The Coalition - because there are so many things that go into the answer. It’s a complex subject that requires so much more than the 10X Tips & Hacks you see all over social media.
However, there are some simple yet critical things that if you don’t get them right, nothing else matters. And those are the things I cover in today’s episode. Specifically, I’ll speak on:
- How to get ruthlessly clear about what it is you do, establishing your niche (8:15)
- How to identify who your competitors are and aren’t (12:20)
- The start-up costs you’ll need to consider (20:20)
