Today’s archetype: The Interrupter
Maybe you know someone like this or maybe you are “The Interrupter” yourself.
Either way, we all know the type - in meetings, conversations, and debates, they are constantly cutting others off, becoming a distraction, dominating the discourse, and/or stifling any sort of collaboration. And often, it comes off negatively, as if they are just looking for attention.
But it’s not always that simple. Sometimes interrupting can simply be a strategy for achieving basic human needs - to be heard, understood, valued, and validated.
Today’s episode is all about how to manage The Interrupter in a variety of contexts. Some of the specific considerations and strategies I cover include,
- Possible root causes for the behavior (6:30)
- How to handle it when someone interrupts you (13:30)
- The WRONG ways to handle it when someone interrupts you (24:10)
- Times or contexts in which interruptions are actually appropriate (27:05)

Real connection is just as essential to our wellbeing as a healthy diet and exercise, if not more.
Don’t believe me? Check out this article, showing that loneliness poses health risks as deadly as smoking.
Need more real-life evidence? Listen to today’s episode, where James Reid (J.R.) opens up about his struggles. On the outside, he had it all figured out - money, a dream job working with professional athletes, and a growing family. But on the inside, he was singing a very different song, and the thing he needed to snap out of it wasn’t what you might expect.
J.R. is an International Peak Performance Strategist, Podcast Host, and Author who, since 2005, has helped pro athletes, public figures, and leaders excel in their pressure-packed careers while confidently upgrading their health and relationships. His clients include elite professional athletes, Fortune 500 executives, and Award-Winning Entrepreneurs.
After a life-altering car accident gave him a major wake-up call, J.R. devoted himself to mastering human performance and showing up bigger for his wife and three kids. As a result, he’s been featured by Focus on the Family and New York Times Best-Selling Author, Michael Hyatt. J.R. also co-authored the book W.O.W. Factor: How Defining Words Can Define Your Life.
Today’s episode covers some specific lessons that can be applied to many areas of life, including:
- How to employ constraints to make purposeful progress toward your goals (27:40)
- How to use struggles and adversity to benefit you in the grand scheme of life (31:10)
- The one thing he needed (that we all tend to avoid the most) that would have pulled him out of the downward spiral earlier (44:35)
- How we can better show up for our friends and loved ones (1:01:30)

We’ve all been sold bad advice about our “wellness” by so-called experts looking to make money and commoditize our confusion.
That’s why in today’s episode, Adam Bornstein and I create some sense out of the diet and fitness myths out there - the things that you are told over and over again you have to do in order to be successful in losing weight, losing fat, building muscle, or living a healthy life.
Adam Bornstein is a New York Times bestselling author and award-winning writer and editor, and the author of You Can't Screw This Up. He is the founder of Born Fitness and Pen Name Consulting, and the co-founder of The Pump with Arnold Schwarzenegger. For the past 20 years, Bornstein has been “the trusted voice in health” as the Fitness and Nutrition editor for Men’s Health, Editorial Director at LIVESTRONG.com, and a columnist for SHAPE, Men’s Fitness, and Muscle & Fitness.
Bornstein has worked as a nutrition advisor for LeBron James, Cindy Crawford, Lindsey Vonn, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. He’s the former Chief Nutrition Officer at Ladder and former Vice President of Nutrition for FitOn. His work has been featured in dozens of publications, including The New York Times, Fast Company, ESPN, and GQ, and he’s appeared on Good Morning America, The Today Show, E! News, and The Cheddar.
Beyond wellness, diet, and behavior change, Adam has so much more to offer - so we shift gears and talk about his work life. Specifically, we dive into -
- Why we struggle to stay healthy even when we have all the necessary resources (5:00)
- The novelty bias - what it is and how it stops us from reaching our goals (24:20)
- The one question you need to ask yourself before you can change your life (42:00)
- Specific tools & strategies Adam uses to manage his life and responsibilities (1:00:30)

Today we are going to dismantle a myth - the myth that leadership is reserved for those with perceived backgrounds and clear past stories that fit neatly into little success templates.
If you're somebody that's ever felt alienated by the traditional leadership discourse, this episode is for you because of our guest and the unique background and insight she brings.
Our guest, Dr. Jesse Piper, is a living counterexample to the conventional leadership narrative. She was raised by her grandmother after a turbulent early childhood marked by her parents’ struggle with substance abuse. And her story isn't about linear progression, but really a journey through complexity, adversity and resilience.
Jessie obtained her PhD in Family Science from Kansas State University. Her professional interests surround grandfamilies, early childhood development, family dynamics and relationships. She has been with her husband for just over a decade, built a new home, and has two small children. Jessie currently works for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment as the Bureau Director of Family Health where she provides leadership to improve and support children and family health across the lifespan.
In today’s episode we cover everything from Jessie’s professional opinions leadership to how she’s dealt with the trauma in her life, including:
- The importance of acceptance in the recovery process (12:40 and throughout)
- How the way we define our identity affects our ability to deal with life transitions (16:10)
- The line between being someone’s superior and their friend (31:55)
- The B.S advice to someone struggling to establish their relationship with themselves (42:15)

In any team or organization, formal and structured meetings are necessary - no doubt. There has to be a documented system of communication for everyone to turn to if there are ever any questions about how, when, and what to communicate.
However, being sucked into this type of rigid structure can have its own consequences, which can be detrimental to a team’s environment, productivity, creativity, and overall success.
So how do we balance this?
Today’s episode dives into this topic from both the perspective of a visionary CEO and the eyes of a day to day task and team manager. More specifically, I cover:
- The skills we develop in the process of discussion (throughout)
- How to deconstruct a problem in a conversation (9:00)
- How collaborative learning promotes positive culture (13:00)
- How to respond when the conversation leaves you (or someone else) disheartened or disappointed (18:10)

There is always a cost to leadership - whether you're on the management side of things, you just view yourself as a simple coach, or you have a family and you have to work on being the best parent or spouse you can.
There is a cost to it all.
And although we all have our own journey and our own struggles, I bet you know very few people who have had to manage all of that - running a business, having a spouse/ family, and also simultaneously battling an extremely rare form of cancer all during a pandemic. Well, that is just what Jennifer Broxterman - our guest today - has had to do, although that is far from what defines her.
Jennifer Broxterman is a Registered Dietitian & Sports Nutritionist. She’s the founder of PROSPER Nutrition Coaching, a world-class nutrition certification designed specifically for gym owners and coaches. She's also a Foods & Nutrition university professor, and writer for Precision Nutrition. She's worked with clients from NHL hockey players and Olympic athletes, to everyday folks looking to eat and feel better.
In today’s episode, we talk about the role of leadership in coaching, developing business skills when you're somebody that is actually just really in love with your trade, and how eating disorders can develop as a result of unhealthy behaviors and habits.
More specifically we cover:
- The one piece of information that served as a game changer in her career (24:10)
- Hacks on how to make the healthy choice the easy choice (33:25)
- Specific examples of how to be an architect of your environment (42:40)

E283 | Negotiation Gone Wrong: Handling Rejection and Earning Respect
Monday Jul 17, 2023
Monday Jul 17, 2023
Rejection is tough.
It can make you feel disrespected and insulted, doubt your skill and value, and even cause you to give up on your efforts completely.
On the other hand, rejection can be one of the most useful forms of feedback you’ll ever receive, and can even result in a more creative and optimal product or service if you handle it the right way.
In today’s episode, I break down and analyze a real life case study - a situation where an individual’s proposal was rejected - and expand on the reasons why her initial response didn’t lead to her desired result and how she can handle it differently in the future.
Specifically, I talk about:
- Why rejection can be so difficult to handle (7:05)
- How to create a zone of possible agreements (15:20)
- How to benefit from rejection (27:15)
- Ways to practice handling rejection & your negotiation skills (32:20)

If there’s one thing we all know, it’s that our brains work differently. We think, relate, and communicate in unique ways.
That’s why communicating with anyone requires you to be a locksmith of people. You must know your audience at such an intimate level that you’re able to find the right key to the right door, and adapt your strategy to achieve common comprehension.
Communicating with neurodiverse individuals has shown to be a common roadblock for many, largely due to misunderstandings, false assumptions, and lack of awareness.
The goal of today’s episode is to explain neurodiversity, debunk the existing myths surrounding the topic, and discuss how to better communicate with neurodivergent individuals. Specifically, we cover:
- Why understanding neurodivergent individuals matters (6:00)
- The definitions and cognitive strengths and weaknesses of individuals with ADHD, Autism, and Dyslexia (throughout)
- Actionable tips for communicating and collaborating with neurodivergent individuals (56:57)
- How to advocate for yourself if you are neurodivergent (1:05:07)

E281| How to Get Better at Receiving Feedback
Monday Jul 03, 2023
Monday Jul 03, 2023
It’s one thing to be great at giving feedback, but how good are you at receiving it?
For most- hearing what we could’ve done better or where we’ve screwed up is extraordinarily painful. Which is why, instead of admitting we were wrong, we often become masters of delusion and start rationalizing our behavior…
But feedback is one of the most useful and powerful tools we have for improvement and it’s not going away. So instead of continuing to throw up that defensive shield, listen to today’s episode for some strategies and tools that will help you receive feedback in a more constructive way.
We also cover:
- The science behind why we respond poorly to feedback
- Why rationalizing doesn’t help & how to stop doing it
- What to say you’ve received feedback you don’t understand or agree with
- When it’s appropriate to reject someone’s feedback

We’ve all heard of the medical professionals who guarantee a cure-all for the ailments they treat – weight loss, hair loss, or pain free joints, you name it – they promise perfection where we know it can’t exist.
Today’s conversation was incredibly refreshing because our guest, Dr. Rafael Gonzalez, does the exact opposite. He talks about a complex subject – regenerative medicine and stem cell therapy – in a grounded, simplified, and no B.S. way.
Dr. Gonzalez, Chief Development & Scientific Officer: TheBioBox & RESTEM, obtained his Ph.D and BS from the University of California, Irvine. In addition to his expertise in degenerative disorders involving the spinal cord, he has extensive experience in stem cell culture and biology, regenerative medicine and maintaining immune health to promote longevity.
Dr. Gonzalez has been in the regenerative medicine sector for more than 20 years. He has several scientific publications, patents in the cell therapeutics-based field, and has worked extensively on secretome/exosome stem cell products. He has also taught, spoken and led many conferences nationwide in the cell therapy and longevity sector.
In today’s episode, Dr. Gonzalez not only explains the basics of stem cells, but also answers some tough questions surrounding ethics and building and managing a staff. Specifically, we discuss:
- What stem cell therapy is and how can it help a variety of people
- How to manage skeptical clients and deliver reliable results
- How he differentiates himself to stand out as professional for the right reasons
- The 3 guiding principles you uses for hiring new staff
Some of Dr. Gonzalez’s Publications:
- Human Prenatal Small Intestine Cells as a Valuable Source of Stem Cells and Epithelial Cells: Phenotypic and Functional Characterization. (2014)
- Administration of autologous bone marrow stem cells into spinal cord injury patients via multiple routes is safe and improves their quality of life: Comprehensive case studies Cell Transplantation. (2008)
- Therapeutic neutralization of CXCL10 decreases secondary degeneration and functional deficit after spinal cord injury in mice. (2007)
You can find more publications, information and connect with Dr. Gonzalez on his LinkedIn.
