E181 | Matt Reynolds: Creating a Product that Stands Out In a Crowded Market
Monday Aug 09, 2021
Monday Aug 09, 2021
It’s not everyday we get the chance to discuss the nitty gritty behind-the-scenes detail required to provide exceptional service (sans compromising quality) with someone who has built a powerhouse company from the ground up.
Today, Matt Reynolds gives us a look under the hood at his online coaching model and his take on the “training” market that can be saturated with mediocrity. You’ll want to take some notes as we discuss topics ranging from the benefits of an apprenticeship model to pricing a premium product and not apologizing for it. You’re also in for a treat as we get a little fired up about why certifications alone aren’t cutting it...
Not only is Matt the founder of Barbell Logic which has grown to be one of the largest online coaching companies on the planet, he has a successful podcast, YouTube channel, and hundreds of articles on the value of strength training. He also knows a thing or two about managing people as he leads a team of 80 incredible high-performing, yet compassionate people.
With nearly 25 years of experience competing in strength sports and coaching barbell-based strength and conditioning. In his earlier life he competed at a high level in both powerlifting and strongman, and in 2008, he founded one of the strongest and largest strength gyms in the country, STRONG Gym, which Matt sold in 2015, to turn his attention to the broader audience of online coaching.
Topics we cover:
-
How to charge what you’re worth
-
What is professionalism in coaching?
-
The difference between a “trainer” and “coach”
-
Providing Pandemic-proof value and service
-
How to structure a premier offer for premier clients

As you heard in today’s episode, becoming an apprentice is the fastest way to learn a craft. That’s why our Apprenticeship communication workshops, designed for professionals in all fields are the best place to learn the craft of communication and grow as a leader. We have a few more coming up this year:
Today’s episode was brought to you by VersaClimber, one of the true OGs in the fitness space. You know I’d never sell you anything I don’t use myself and my VersaClimber is the best investment I’ve made in my home gym, especially now that my crazy schedule doesn’t allow for the same two hours workouts of years past. Reach out to these guys and tell them I sent you.
Finally, our Coalition mentoring program (which I can only do twice per year) is now accepting applications for our November program. We’ve already locked in most of our spots so if you’re looking for a community of like-minded professionals looking to grow skills in both business and communication, submit your application TODAY!

We’re bringing you something a little different for today's bonus episode. Recently I was a guest on my friend Scott Livingston’s podcast “Leave Your Mark” and our conversation was so good I wanted to make sure you had a chance to listen to it here; a “multicast” if you will.
Alongside Scott (a regular on our show, see episodes 58 & 128) and his good friend Dom Gauthier (a business leader, coach, broadcaster and former Olympic moguls skier), we discuss everything from how to better define and speak about communication (including a deep dive into the research behind it), strategies for tailoring communication to a team as opposed to an individual and how coaching differs in different cultural contexts… or does it?
As a reminder, Scott has been working in the field of athletic performance for twenty-five years. He is renowned for his dedication to building a more efficient, effective, and resilient athlete using his ability to assess movement dysfunction and deliver corrective exercise, while merging such strategies with effective and specific performance training. He has trained and reconditioned athletes at every level including professional athletes, Olympic athletes, and college athletes, as well as highly motivated recreational athletes.

E179 | The Truth About Overcoming an Eating & Exercise Disorder
Monday Jul 26, 2021
Monday Jul 26, 2021
This was by far the hardest episode I’ve ever had to record. And yes, I phrase it that way purposefully; telling this story is something I very much view as a responsibility.
So where do I begin?
It’s true- at this point many people know bits and pieces of my story but there’s still much I haven’t shared. Today's episode is the full, unabridged, unapologetic, uncensored saga of my hospitalization and subsequent recovery.
Compassion comes in many forms so I won’t bullshit you- today we’re going to discuss hard things. If you’re looking for someone to talk platitudes and cliches, you’re in the wrong place; if you’re ready for the hard truth and for tools to confront the condition, this one's for you.
Truthfully, today’s episode is one I wish I would have had when I was going through this myself.
We’ll dive deep into the research, how the behavior develops in the first place (underlying causes and contributing factors), who's most at risk and what does (and doesn’t work) when trying to work your way through it. Most importantly, I’ll address these factors from both sides: the caretaker and the individual going through it.
Do me (and your loved ones) a favor and share this episode. There are people who need to hear this because they’ve been lied to, misled and shamed into thinking their eating or exercise disorder is abnormal. Not only that, these problems extend much further than we all realize and probably afflict countless people you know but who haven’t said anything to you about it.
Lastly, if you or anyone you love are dealing with the issues discussed in this episode, please take a look at the links provided below- they are by no means a diagnostic tool or a sufficient solution but they can get you started:

Finally, we are hosting a free virtual workshop tomorrow, July 27th, 2021 at 3PM EST. This is a 60 minute strategy session for those who want help clarifying their niche, competitive advantage, message and audience!

E178 | Kindra Hall: Choose Your Story, Change Your Life
Monday Jul 19, 2021
Monday Jul 19, 2021
When trying to convince someone or alter their behavior we often lead with facts and figures. Ironically, that might be the LEAST effective strategy for inspiring real, lasting change. Rather, we should utilize the most powerful persuasive ability humans possess: storytelling.
You might roll your eyes or reminisce on bedtime stories as a kid, but good stories aren’t just for fun and laughs- they can quite literally capture audiences, move people to action, and catalyze change. Better yet, storytelling is a skill and just by understanding/utilizing a few simple “ingredients” we have the ability to make our communication that much more convincing.
Today’s guest, Kinda Hall is a professional storyteller (yes, you read that right!) who teaches leaders, executives and entrepreneurs across countless industries to harness and leverage the power of their stories. Her book, Stories that Stick debuted at #2 on the Wall Street Journal Bestseller List and Forbes said it “may be the most valuable business book you read." In 2020, she became the Chief Storytelling Officer of SUCCESS Magazine where she interviews icons like Deepak Chopra and Misty Copeland in an effort to hear and share their stories of success. She is based in New York City with her husband and two children.
On today’s episode we discuss:
- The 4 essential components to a good story and how to implement them
- Why every professional needs to become an expert storyteller
- When to share personal stories and knowing where to draw the line
- How to create powerful stories from the small moments in life

Imagine leaving your family and moving to a foreign country where you don’t speak the language or know the culture, tasked with making some of the world’s most elite athletes faster and stronger while winning multiple World Championships and Olympic medals along the way.
Now try convincing someone in that position that high level communication skills, building buy-in and learning how to adapt to changing contexts WON’T play a major role in their success. Better yet- convince Joseph Coyne of that…
Recognized as a leading expert in high performance sport, Joseph has over 15 years’ experience working with elite professional and Olympic athletes, and most recently was the Performance Director for the UFC Performance Institute Shanghai. Prior to joining the UFC in 2019, athletes personally supported by Joseph broke 6 world records and collected 15 gold medals at the Olympics and various world championships from. As a speaker, Joseph has lectured at a number of international sport science and strength and conditioning conferences. Joseph is a current PhD scholar at Edith Cowan University (Perth, Australia) on training load and performance and serves as a reviewer for a number of different academic journals.
On today’s episode we discuss:
- Sources of internal and external load in communication and leadership
- What finance can teach us about high performance
- Strategies for building buy-in and trust from day one on a new job
- How to change your message to speak more effectively to a diverse audience

E176 | When Positive Thinking Doesn't Work
Monday Jul 05, 2021
Monday Jul 05, 2021
Positive thinking is overdone and often ineffective when applied to the messy realities of life and leadership.
I’m not saying there isn’t a use for it but rather that we should rethink when and to whom we recommend it. Why? Positive thinking can lull us into a false sense of security, make us overconfident and keep us from taking action when we need to.
What if instead of judging thoughts as positive or negative we measured them in terms of how productive they are? What if we embraced feelings of anxiety and nerves because it means we care and/or are pushing our limits? On today’s show we will tackle these questions and many more.
Also, we were thinking… Why is it that we look for physical asymmetries in athletes and clients, but we don’t measure them in our learning or communication? People are the ultimate performance variable so if we aren’t assessing gaps here, aren’t we missing a huge piece of the puzzle?
The Apprenticeship, a two day interactive workshop specializing in how to deal with people, power dynamics, hard conversations and the messy realities of life and leadership is aimed at closing that gap. Check us out at one of the following cities:

E175 | Nikita Emtsov: The Hero's Journey
Monday Jun 28, 2021
Monday Jun 28, 2021
“Where there’s a journey, there’s sacrifice” - Nikita Emtsov
It has always been our goal that listeners hear themselves in the guests we interview on this podcast because it’s only when you relate to a person that their story and message resonates and moves you to action.
Nikita Emtsov is a perfect representation of the professionals in the Art of Coaching community and in this episode you’ll hear his raw depiction of the challenges (from self-acceptance and mental health struggles to finding a unique niche and vocation) we all go through in pursuit of our own hero’s journey.
Nikita is a Russian-born, Toronto-based strength coach and certified personal trainer. Having pursued a plethora of creative vocations over the last 15 years—some of which have included stage acting, filmmaking, songwriting, and graphic design—he has faced plenty of challenges finding his place in the world before developing a passion for weightlifting and- ultimately- coaching.
After finding a multitude of unexpected mental health and creativity-related benefits in his pursuit of strength, Nikita has made it his mission to help other creative storytellers get physically and mentally stronger and make training part of their own Hero's Journey.
We discuss:
- Ways to balance perfectionism and creativity - are they truly at odds?
- Why we should use storytelling to script our own “hero’s journey”
- How to listen to and utilize our internal voice for good
- Methods for relinquishing control and embracing uncertainty

E174 | Christina Myers: Rethinking How We Approach Coaching Female Athletes
Monday Jun 21, 2021
Monday Jun 21, 2021
It’s time to rethink how we approach coaching female athletes. Understanding and appreciating nuances in their physiology and psychology is one thing, treating them as a “special population” is another. So which differences should we attend to and which just aren’t true?
Today we’re joined by Christina Myers, a strength and conditioning & gymnastics coach who’s changing the game when it comes to the training of female athletes and redefining coaching styles traditionally expected of women.
Christina owns a private sector strength & conditioning company and serves as both head strength and conditioning coach and head coach of a high-level competitive gymnastics program in Birmingham, Alabama. She took a non-traditional route to the strength & conditioning profession and uses this experience to mentor undergraduates and young coaches in the field. Christina holds a masters degree in Strength & Conditioning (MS Applied Exercise Science, S&C Concentration) and regularly guest lectures for undergraduate and graduate programs catering to potential strength coaches.
We cover:
- Considerations for training female athletes
- Strategies for working with highly intellectual & perfectionist individuals
- How to identify and eradicate psychological abuse in sport
- Why we should lean into non-traditional coaching styles

E172 | Mark Fisher: How to Approach Conflict, Chaos & Conversations Remotely
Monday Jun 14, 2021
Monday Jun 14, 2021
We’ve heard the leadership cliches, read the business books and tried the various morning routines but something’s still not clicking...
We can try to work harder and hope our efforts don’t go unnoticed... or we can flip the script, become a unicorn and work with ninjas.
No seriously, just ask Mark Fisher.
Mark is an international speaker, consultant, and entrepreneur. He and his “non-sexual life partner” Michael Keeler founded Business for Unicorns in 2016 and have since worked with many of the leading fitness studios across the US, the UK, and Australia. Past non-fitness clients include Sony Music, Sylvan Learning, Novus Surgical, and Security Scorecard. He is also a proud alumni speaker of TEDxBroadway.
In addition to consulting through BFU, Mark is the co-founder of Mark Fisher Fitness, one of the most unusual gyms in the fitness industry. MFF operates a physical location in midtown Manhattan and a fast-growing online “virtual” location. MFF was recognized as #312 on the 2015 Inc. 500 fastest growing companies in America, as well as one of Men's Health's "Top 20 Gyms in America."
Obviously, Mark has made it his mission to approach both business and fitness in a unique way meaning this episode is anything but ordinary. Today we cover:
- Why you should welcome and foster healthy conflict in your organization
- When and why you should give away power as a leader
- Managing by metrics when the important things aren't easily measured
- How to effectively bring emotion into the workplace

Today’s episode is brought to you by: a hard truth.
No matter how good you are at what you do, how hard you work or much you want to help others, none of it will make an impact if you don’t know how to reach your audience or communicate your message in a way that resonates with the people that need you and the work you provide the most.
The cost of doing nothing is far greater than the cost of making a mistake or hearing someone grumble. We all have skills and value we can provide and though I know it doesn't feel that way to those of you who are perfectionists- there are people out there who need what you do.
That’s why we created our online course, Blindspot. It will help you build your brand and business the right way by turning what you know into what you do. It will help you identify your core strengths and how you can provide the most value to others, then systematize that in a way that allows you to get it to your audience so you can stand out without selling out.
