Guys, I think this episode is going to be one of our more popular ones simply because of the uniqueness of the conversation. Justin shares such candid information with us today that you will not want to miss this one.
Justin is an emergency and sports medicine physician, and he has honestly had a unique path. He graduated in 2003 from the Harvard University School of Medicine. The biggest takeaway from my conversation with Justin is that all high stakes jobs where people are trying to achieve optimal performance require a combination of improv game theory, persuasion, and influence.
Key points discussed with Justin today:
- Framing and validating the experience of a patient and letting them know what they are going through is real
- What the 'tyranny of now' means to Justin and why he uses this to help patients handle their emotional state
- How proxemics and aesthetics play into a patients confidence in the person treating them
- The reality that medical professionals are humans too and can swing for the fences only to strikeout
- Acknowledging the tremendous fear of trauma patients but at the same time letting them know you're the boss and you need them to let you do your job effectively

E68 | Carl Coward: Embracing Difficulty & Finding Your Way
Thursday Mar 05, 2020
Thursday Mar 05, 2020
If finding a mentor is something that is on the top of your mind or something you're still looking to do, we have a free guide for you on how to find a mentor and, most importantly, how to reach out to them.Visit here for more information.
Today, I am joined on the podcast by my friend, Carl Coward. This one is such a meaningful episode for me as Carl is a family friend. He is somebody that, when I lived out in LA, was one of the only people that kept me sane because he is just such a realist. Carl is such a hungry dreamer, and at the same time, such a unique innovator and also one of the best conversationalists I've ever had the pleasure of meeting in my life. I hope you guys enjoy this one as much as I did.Topics discussed with Carl:
- How starting with respect and ending with respect built Carl's understanding of hierarchy
- Seeing life as a never-ending journey of crossroads and how Carl met his mentor this way
- Encouraging people from the upper echelon academic institutions that their education is not enough and how you need to be different
- Were Carl's career goals of his own or only what he thought they were supposed to be
