I want to ask you a question real quick... how many people do you know could be diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor? Yet they go on to become a national level weightlifter, they're nominated for an Emmy, they've written their own book, they are a marketing director at their own business, and on top of all that they are a mother. Well that is exactly what today's guest, Andy Ptacek, has accomplished. Today is unlike any interview I've had in the past and that is no knock on any of our previous guests. This is an episode that is so special for so many different reasons. If there is any episode where it really talks about how the weight room transcends into the boardroom, life, and how strain can really amplify our ability as people and professionals in a myriad of different ways, this is it. If you have any questions after this episode, reach out to Andy as she is a tremendous resource. Enjoy!
Topics Andy and I discuss today:
- Andy's introduction
- The earth-shattering news of receiving word that you have an inoperable brain tumor and how the fear of not being able to raise your own children kicks in
- The battles along the way after having a brain tumor surgically removed and learning how to overcome this adversity
- How Andy processed that her life was on a short clock and how her reality became a gift
- The challenges of continuing to train in weightlifting with a PICC line IV
- How Andy got to the good place she is in now by using perspective and being so aware of the journey she was on

Today's episode is another quick solo episode where I take a look at why I started this podcast and why my goal was to separate from the thousands of other podcasts out there. For a while, I avoided starting a podcast simply because there are so many podcasts already in existence and everyone has a story. I think what it becomes less and less about is giving you the right information and more about seeking huge names in an attempt to simply grow their audience. I do this podcast to give you, the listener, a voice and that was the whole point of starting The Art of Coaching podcast. I am not talking about any particular industry. I am speaking to every industry and hoping the content being delivered becomes more authentic and less redundant. I appreciate everyone listening and I hope you enjoy today's episode on this topic.

David Joyce is a great friend of mine and someone that I have always looked up to. David has a mind that is absolutely unparalleled and he has an ability to provide some of the most thoughtful feedback of any human I have ever come across. This will be very apparent after listening to my interview with David.
Since recording this episode, David has since moved on from his position with the GWS Giants. David has always had a long-term goal of more flexibility to consult, work with, and learn from other organizations as he is now doing.
Topics discussed with David today:
- The complications David is facing relating to communication
- Can communication and persuasion be taken for granted
- What David did to pinpoint his inadequacies as a communicator
- What in particular is driving David's curiosity
- The many ways creativity is intertwined with the leadership process
- Reasons why it is important to use skilled interpersonal communication as a strategy
- David shares his thoughts on when to know it is the right time to walk away from something and the negative implications of not doing so
- David's key challenge to listeners of The Art of Coaching Podcast

The first workshops to dive more deeply into the technical aspects of communication in coaching are now live!
If you are someone who values deep learning, the acquisition and evaluation of new skills you will actually use, as well as finding out what makes those around you tick, then we invite you to join us for our highly interactive Apprenticeship™ 2-day live event!
The Art of Coaching Apprenticeship™ is research backed, and is the first event of its kind to truly bridge the gap between skilled interpersonal communication and leadership development across domains.
Collectively, our programs have welcomed leaders of all ages from over 30 professions and 22 countries including Australia, Mexico, Canada, Ireland, Japan, Brazil, Africa, China, India, Norway and Poland.
Simply put, if you work with people in any capacity, The Apprenticeship™ is for you!
Whether your goal is to become more effective at building buy-in with those you lead, improving your ability to adapt on the fly, making critical decisions under uncertainty, or simply improving your own self-awareness as a leader, these two days will help you extract strategies that you can actually put to use.
The vast majority of our attendees seek us out specifically because they have had enough of the traditional “death-by-PowerPoint” seminars that are rife with vague self-help sound bites, trust falls, overcrowded conference rooms, shouting gurus, and topics that ignore the chaotic realities of true leadership such as:
Topics Include:
- Navigating Power Dynamics & Politics
- Building Buy-In Across Varying Generations
- The Role of Perception in Leadership
- The Skilled and Ethical Use of Influence in Leadership
- 7 Critical Elements of Interpersonal Communication
- Strategies for Making Better Decisions While Under Duress
- The Truth Regarding Self-Awareness and Reflection
- Conflict Resolution in the New Age
- Creating Assessments and Evaluations For Yourself and Your Team
This is done through a strategic mixture of case study reviews, role playing break-outs, self and peer evaluations, film break-downs, group discussions and more.
The truth is that every leader needs a safe place to rehearse and refine their strategies for some of life’s biggest moments-The Apprenticeship™ is that place.
We look forward to seeing you!
*For questions regarding potential discounts or bespoke events please see our FAQ page and email info@artofcoaching.com

We have been told a lot of things about leadership. Much of which has come in fortune cookie format through the myriad of self-help books mass produced for today's motivational market. The truth is that "effective leadership" is far more contextual than we think. In today's episode we discuss a few of the issues surrounding this topic as well as how it is negatively impacting leadership development.
If you enjoy discussing principles of leadership, and want to dive more deeply into what the science TRULY says, be sure to join us at our Apprenticeship™ workshops available worldwide: https://artofcoaching.com/the-apprenticeship/

In this episode my guest Danny Matta and I share some of our takes on the dangers of not understanding your worth and the thought processes that need to be considered when providing a service. Fair warning, some of the language in here is not appropriate for children.
A few additional points- any dollar amounts discussed in this episode whether it be in regards to physical therapy services, speaking rate breakdowns and/or course costs are hypotheticals only.
The critical subjects within this episode are as follows:
- Are "mastermind groups" a cult or do they have a purpose
- How a lack of economic education impede your progress as a professional
- Why cash based PT practices are more beneficial for both patients and practitioners
- Figuring out the right approach for you to address financial debt
- Why strength coaches and educators need to quit demonizing money
