E281| How to Get Better at Receiving Feedback
Monday Jul 03, 2023
Monday Jul 03, 2023
It’s one thing to be great at giving feedback, but how good are you at receiving it?
For most- hearing what we could’ve done better or where we’ve screwed up is extraordinarily painful. Which is why, instead of admitting we were wrong, we often become masters of delusion and start rationalizing our behavior…
But feedback is one of the most useful and powerful tools we have for improvement and it’s not going away. So instead of continuing to throw up that defensive shield, listen to today’s episode for some strategies and tools that will help you receive feedback in a more constructive way.
We also cover:
- The science behind why we respond poorly to feedback
- Why rationalizing doesn’t help & how to stop doing it
- What to say you’ve received feedback you don’t understand or agree with
- When it’s appropriate to reject someone’s feedback

We’ve all heard of the medical professionals who guarantee a cure-all for the ailments they treat – weight loss, hair loss, or pain free joints, you name it – they promise perfection where we know it can’t exist.
Today’s conversation was incredibly refreshing because our guest, Dr. Rafael Gonzalez, does the exact opposite. He talks about a complex subject – regenerative medicine and stem cell therapy – in a grounded, simplified, and no B.S. way.
Dr. Gonzalez, Chief Development & Scientific Officer: TheBioBox & RESTEM, obtained his Ph.D and BS from the University of California, Irvine. In addition to his expertise in degenerative disorders involving the spinal cord, he has extensive experience in stem cell culture and biology, regenerative medicine and maintaining immune health to promote longevity.
Dr. Gonzalez has been in the regenerative medicine sector for more than 20 years. He has several scientific publications, patents in the cell therapeutics-based field, and has worked extensively on secretome/exosome stem cell products. He has also taught, spoken and led many conferences nationwide in the cell therapy and longevity sector.
In today’s episode, Dr. Gonzalez not only explains the basics of stem cells, but also answers some tough questions surrounding ethics and building and managing a staff. Specifically, we discuss:
- What stem cell therapy is and how can it help a variety of people
- How to manage skeptical clients and deliver reliable results
- How he differentiates himself to stand out as professional for the right reasons
- The 3 guiding principles you uses for hiring new staff
Some of Dr. Gonzalez’s Publications:
- Human Prenatal Small Intestine Cells as a Valuable Source of Stem Cells and Epithelial Cells: Phenotypic and Functional Characterization. (2014)
- Administration of autologous bone marrow stem cells into spinal cord injury patients via multiple routes is safe and improves their quality of life: Comprehensive case studies Cell Transplantation. (2008)
- Therapeutic neutralization of CXCL10 decreases secondary degeneration and functional deficit after spinal cord injury in mice. (2007)
You can find more publications, information and connect with Dr. Gonzalez on his LinkedIn.

E279 | Dr. Alex Lyon: Positive Communication for Leaders
Monday Jun 19, 2023
Monday Jun 19, 2023
In a way, communication is like baseball.
If you merely look at the sport, it seems fairly simple and easy - throwing, catching, and hitting a ball. But knowing how to play the sport and actually doing it are two very different things.
It’s the same with effective communication. Many leaders know what needs to be done, yet fail when it comes to the execution part. In today’s episode, Dr. Lyon speaks on 6 key behaviors for leaders to develop, which are also at the heart of his soon to be released book Positive Communication for Leaders. By themselves, they aren’t anything extraordinary. But cumulatively, they lead to extraordinary results.
Alex Lyon (Ph.D.) is professor of communication at the State University of New York, Brockport, and a professional speaker and consultant. He has published original research in several peer-reviewed journals including Communication Monographs and Management Communication Quarterly, and has worked directly with highly respected organizations such as Nike, Google, and Visa.
He hosts the 480,000+ subscriber YouTube channel, Communication Coach Alex Lyon that has accumulated over 25 million views, and is the founder of Communication Coach Academy, an online program to help emerging leaders hone their communication skills.
In addition to those 6 key behaviors, we also talk about how to manage people that don't want to change and how to create connections even when there's conflict. More specifically, we dive into:
- His leadership roadblock & how he overcame it (17:50)
- 6 key behaviors to create more positive relationships as a leader (43:40)
- How to be clear & direct in your leadership communication (1:05:50)
- Where to start if you want to become a better communicator (1:15:10)

E278 | Victor Hall: Quiet Influence - How to Impact Others as an Introvert
Monday Jun 12, 2023
Monday Jun 12, 2023
“Leadership isn’t for me. I’m naturally introverted, quiet, and shy - no one would ever listen to me.”
Although this isn’t a direct quote, it’s a common excuse we hear from coaches, leaders, and business owners alike as to why they can’t (or won’t) lead or have the impact they want on those around them. And to put it bluntly, this topic doesn’t get the amount of discussion it deserves.
That’s why in today’s episode Victor Hall, VP of Operations at EXOS, provides insight on his own experience pursuing impactful leadership as an introvert. Together, we explore how to influence others, navigate different conversational styles and break through the barriers of shyness.
Victor Hall has spent over 20 years training athletes, leading performance teams, and educating fellow coaches and trainers. During that time, he has worked within collegiate, private facilities, and military environments. Victor joined EXOS in 2010 as a Performance Manager of a Human Performance Program for the Department of Defense, and currently serves as the Vice President of Operations at EXOS.
We cover a few key components that make up this pursuit of effective leadership, including:
- The secrets of making an impact as an introvert (10:45)
- How self awareness contributes to leadership and creating a lasting impact (13:40 & 46:20)
- Where his natural tendencies haven’t served him in the past (15:55)
- What he does to embrace authenticity instead of trying to “fix” himself (1:09:25)

Parenting is tough. No doubt about it.
But it only gets harder when your child comes home with a story about their coach yelling at them, refusing to let them play or being "mean" to them.
Whether you're hearing about this poor behavior secondhand or witnessing it in person, approaching your child's coach can be an intimidating task.
Having been on both sides of this situation, today's episode is full of different strategies for deciding when and how to broach this conversation.
Some of the specifics are:
- How to choose the right time for the conversation (8:50 & 19:50)
- How to practice ahead of time (14:15)
- Specific phrases for initiating the topic (throughout)
- The 4 categories you must be aware of to help shape your specific strategy (25:30)
This is only one example of some of the tough conversations we find ourselves needing to have in the messy realities of life and leadership. If this is a skill you’d like to develop, if you want more of these conversations to go your way, if you want to avoid blow ups and other poor outcomes, you need to to attend our live Apprenticeship Communication Workshop. E274 | Erik Korem: Adapting to Stress: Practical vs Optimal
Monday May 15, 2023
Monday May 15, 2023
If anyone tells you you can manage your stress better, they’re lying to you.
Can you manage what’s going on in the stock market, the government, or the fact that sometimes drivers will run a red light and accidentally hit you? NO!
At the end of the day, there is no such thing as stress management. But being the adaptation machines that we are as human beings, the good news is that we can build our capacity to better handle the different stressors that life throws at us.
And in today’s episode, Dr. Erik Korem reveals exactly how to do that.
Dr. Erik Korem is a High-Performance thought leader that introduced sports science and athlete tracking technologies to collegiate and professional (NFL) football. He has worked with the National Football League, Power-5 NCAA programs, gold-medal Olympians, Nike, and the United States Department of Defense. Erik is an expert in sleep and stress resilience and holds a doctorate in Exercise Science.
Erik is also the Founder and CEO of AIM7, a health and fitness app that unlocks the power of wearables by providing you with daily personalized recommendations for your mind, body, and recovery to help you look, feel, and perform your best.
In addition to his explanation of the 5 Pillars for Building Adaptive Capacity, Dr. Korem speaks on several contributing factors to the creation of AIM7, including:
- The foundational skills that gave him the edge he needed for entrepreneurship (11:30)
- How first-hand experience opened his eyes to building adaptive capacity (17:00)
- How to create the conditions to develop mental fitness (28:40)
- The failures of wearable tech - why they DON’T change long-term behavior (56:45)

“Today’s the day! Time to sit down and hammer out that project I’ve been needing to get done for the last month…
But first, let me get a cup of coffee and pick a playlist to get my mind right. Ok. I know I already have this started in excel, but I kinda want to make it in powerpoint instead. Let me transfer that file over. Oh, wow look at all these new effects they added- I wonder what they all do?! Dang, I need a coffee refill….”
If this routine sounds familiar, don’t fret- procrastinating is part of being human.
It’s also precisely why in today’s episode, I’m diving deep into what procrastination really is, what it looks like (in all of its various manifestations), and a variety of simple strategies to overcome it so it doesn’t create additional stress and impede your ability to make real progress.
Some specific points covered include:

- The difference between procrastinating and intentional delay (3:20)
