E331 | Dontari Poe: Mental Toughness Myths and Life Tips
Monday Jun 17, 2024
Monday Jun 17, 2024
Imagine what it takes to reach the pinnacle of any profession. We’re not just talking about the top 5-10%, but fractions of that. Now add that this business is composed of the largest, fastest, and most explosive athletes on the planet, competing in a collision sport where success and failure are determined in split seconds. Oh, did we mention that millions of dollars are on the line?
Today, we are joined by someone who was not just a part of that elite club but reached the highest highs—from the trenches. In the 1st Round of the 2012 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs selected Dontari Poe with the 11th overall pick. Over the next nine seasons, Poe became an All-Pro Defensive Lineman, wreaking havoc on backfields across the league. His journey began long before he became a pro, and today he shares some timeless and invaluable lessons he learned along the way. This show is like our workshops: uncut, uncensored, and 100% real. PARENTAL ADVISORY for a few instances of coarse language.
In this episode, we discuss:
- The truth about mental toughness, common myths, and how to cut through the BS
- How to avoid letting our environment dictate who we become
- The importance of setting boundaries when helping others
- What it takes to ensure we’re at our best in our biggest moments
We want to thank Dontari for joining us and answering one of our listener’s questions. If you have something you’d like us to address on a future podcast, please let us know! You can reach us directly at info@artofcoaching.com or submit your questions HERE.

Relationships are hard. Even if you’ve been with your better half for years, it can still be easy to miss the forest for the trees during busy times. We know that when dealing with people miscommunication is the baseline, but does it have to be this way with those we love the most?
Today, we address a real-life situation sent in by one of our listeners and provide focused advice on how to have a difficult conversation with your spouse. Nothing will haunt you like the spirit of the unsaid and if you or your partner’s needs aren’t being fulfilled, the road WILL become rocky. How do we go about expressing ourselves without sounding needy? How can you get what you want while enhancing the relationship for both of you?
In this highly practical episode, we discuss:
- The dangers of assuming someone knows everything about you
- How to ensure we’re not the problem and how to reverse course if we are
- Practical ways to start the conversation and the one element that MUST be included
- Research about unexpressed feelings and how to avoid this tragedy
If there are other topics you’d like us to dive into in our podcast, please let us know! If you have a specific situation you need help with, we keep everything completely anonymous - nothing will be traced back to you. Have you ever been in the middle of a conversation and thought “can we just cut to the chase?”
For some people small talk seems like a complete waste of time, a painful variation of the verbal headlock. There are other people who seem to naturally flow through these conversations using them to build relationships with a diverse group of people, while simultaneously keeping their finger on the pulse of what’s happening in their communities.

- The ramifications of refusing to engage in them and their evolutionary importance
- How our drives play a direct role in our approach and goals for these interactions
- Tips to manage and mitigate the cognitive load these conversations cost
- Practical strategies for navigating and reaping the benefits from small talk
Today’s episode was made as a result of listener questions and situations attendees at our latest workshop wanted help with. Reach out to us at info@artofcoaching.com or visit artofcoaching.com/question if there’s something you’d like to hear about on the podcast.

You have to admit, it happens a lot. You’ll be doing something mundane and BOOM, an amazing idea hits you that you’ll want to remember for later. Only you don’t, and all of that potential slips away…
The amount of books that go unwritten, keynote speeches undelivered, businesses or products not developed - the list is endless. High-performers recognize the power of capturing these thoughts and have a system for seizing and converting them into something tangible that can add value to the world and change people’s lives.
As with any topic, before you can figure out how to make it the most applicable to you, we must start from the beginning. In this podcast we discuss:
- How capturing ideas can reduce cognitive load
- Developing a flexible structure that doesn’t stifle your personality
- Tips for organizing thoughts and ideas so you can recall them when the time is right
- The many benefits of using voice memos that you’ve probably never considered before
